MELTING MEN

2009

In this art installation, Alvedo carved 1,000 figures out of ice and placed them on the steps of the concert hall in Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt square with temperatures of 73 degrees Fahrenheit, (23 degrees Celsius), the ice figures began melting within half an hour. The project was entitled ‘Melting Men’ and was meant to bring awareness to the World Wildlife Fund’s warning, that melting ice could cause sea levels to rise more than 3.3 ft by 2100. This artwork was selected because of its depiction of the human population, melting away due to climate change due to the high atmospheric temperature. This art installation was an interesting and metaphorical depiction of the irreversible and inevitable impact climate change will have on the world’s population.
