VIRTUAL FOREST

2018

This interactive art project reinforces the reputation of Paris as a City of Light. A smartphone app allows nearby onlookers of the crowd-funded project to choose a tree and personalize a message. As they choose their tree, the app detects the person’s heartbeat and each virtual tree grown on the tower will use real-time, 3-D mapping to project their tree on the Eiffel Tower, generating a virtual forest each night. For every virtual tree, a real tree will be planted in one of 7 reforestation programs around the world, which offers long-term social and environmental results. This artwork connects to the narrative theme of climate change because this art installation displays virtual landscapes and greenery onto man-made structures, beautiful yet slightly disturbing in the sense that it is a dystopian reminder that our future and our trees are something that a lot of people take for granted.
